Abstract :
Objectives: Ultrasonograhy is widely used in daily practice. In this study, style of patient-doctor communication and effect of the quality of ultrasonography were evaluated by measuring the patient’s information about ultrasonography. Materials and methods: 657 cases who were referred to our department were asked to complete a questionnaire comprising thirteen questions. The respondents were questioned on their age, education, place of residence whether they speak Turkish or not, who the US examination was conducted by and why and their choice of US operator. Results: The mean age of patients was 35 years (399 females, 258 males) years. Seventy-one (10.8 %) of our cases did no know their ages and 148 (22.5 %) were not speaking Turkish. Among participants 293 (44.6 %) cases were not properly educated, 337 (51%) cases did not know what was applied to them, and 414 (63.0%), 125 (19.0%) and 4 (0.6%) of them identified the person who applied ultrasonograhy to them as a doctor, a nurse, and a secretary, respectively. Among all cases 63.2% did not report any preference about the gender of their doctor performing ultrasonography to them. Conclusions: It has been concluded that, due to deficiencies in education, patients are not well informed on radiology and ultrasonography.
