Abstract :
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the possible effect of the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device on the periodontal status in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Comprehensive clinical periodontal examination was repeated 6 years after the treatment was started in 11 patients (3 moderate, 8 severe OSAS) who were diagnosed with OSAS and using CPAP device regularly. Probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing (BOP) and plaque index (PI) were recorded and compared with the baseline data. RESULTS: There was no significant difference between the moderate and severe OSAS groups in terms of CAL, PI measurements between the baseline and the 6th year after the treatment (p 0.05). Baseline, 6th year PD and the 6th year BOP values were higher in the moderate OSAS group (p = 0.024, p = 0.030 and p=0.014, respectively). No significant difference was found in the number of teeth present between the baseline and the 6th year in either of the groups or the whole population (p 0.05). When the clinical periodontal measurements were compared between the baseline and the 6th year in smokers and non-smokers, the results were found to be similar (p 0.05). CONCLUSION: Within the limits of the present study, it can be concluded that long-term OSAS treatment with CPAP device does not have a significant effect on the clinical periodontal status.
