Abstract :
Metaplasia is a reversible replacement of one cell type with another mature differentiated cell type. Osseous metaplasia refers to the formation of mature bone elements in extraskeletal tissues. It can occur anywhere in body. It is encountered very rarely. This rare finding has been reported in some tissues and neoplasia of various organs. Osseous metaplasia in cardiac valves appears infrequently in literature. The exact pathophysiologic mechanisms of osseous metaplasia and the origin of bone cells in ossified valves are unknown. However, this metaplasia process has been reported to be closely related with calcification. In our study we aimed to present a case in which we diagnosed as osseous metaplasia in mitral valve.
