Evaluation of color changes observed on the enamel surface after fixed orthodontic treatment with SpectroShade MicroTM

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the enamel color changes observed after fixed orthodontic treatment with SpectroShade MicroTM. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The study included 120 maxillary and mandibular central and lateral incisors and canine teeth of 10 subjects who had fixed-orthodontic treatment. Pretreatment and post-treatment enamel color changes were evaluated from the middle third of the buccal sur- faces of the teeth using SpectroShade MicroTM. The CIE L*a*b* system that expresses the color coordinates in L*, a*, and b* symbols was used to determine the tooth colorand color changes (ΔE). Paired t-test was used to com- pare the pretreatment and post-treatment changes in L*, a*, and b* values. One-way analysis of variance was per- formed to compare the tooth groups in terms of changes in ΔL, Δa, Δb, and ΔE values. RESULTS: Statistically significant decreases were deter- mined in L* values of mandibular central (p=0.036) and lat- eral (p=0.004) teeth and in b* values of maxillary (p=0.036) and mandibular (p=0.020) central teeth. Insignificant differences were observed among the tooth groups in terms of ΔL*, Δa*, Δb*, and ΔE values. It was determined that the mean ΔE value of all teeth was 1.89 ± 0.77, and visible but clinically acceptable tooth color change occurred. CONCLUSION: After fixed orthodontic treatment, it was ob- served that the tooth color became darker and shifted into blue color ranges.
