The Analysis of Large Forest Fires in Izmir and Manisa Provinces
Abstract :
Forest fires are one of the most disturbing factors affecting forested area of Turkey. Nowadays, it is accepted that climate and weather conditions play a crucial role on the fire act, especially fire ignition and fire growth. However, the natural fire breakers such as the structure of the land, lakes and rivers, agricultural land and tree species and fire extinguishing facilities are also affective on the size of burned area. In this article, we studied “large forest fires” which affect 100 hectares or a larger area in the Izmir and Manisa provinces of Turkey were examined. Between the years 1976 and 2010, 77 large forest fires occurred in the research area. This article focuses on the locations, reasons of the large forest fires and especially the weather conditions during the days on which they occurred.
