A Q-Method Study: Examining The Teachers’ Perception On School
Abstract :
This study was conducted to examine teachers perceptions on school counsellors. The study was carried out under Phenomenology design, which is one of the qualitative research designs. Q- Method was used in the study as technique. Q Method is an analysis type used to measure individuals attitudes and perceptions. In the study group of the research, consisted of 46 teachers (21 females and 25 males).These teachers were selected based on the criterion sampling method, which is a kind of purposive sampling. In this study, a research form was developed to obtain the data and the Q-stream prepared by the researchers was used. In the process of data collection, each sentence in the form was written on a separate card. Teachers were asked to place these cards on the Q-stream. Placement / sorting by teachers were recorded. The data recorded at the last stage were analyzed using the PQ Method program. As a result of the analysis, it was observed that the teachers perceptions on school counsellors were found to be under two factors. According to the teachers under the first factor, school counsellor’s deal with the students problems, ensure the family’s participation in the guidance activities and contribute to the educational, professional and personal / social development of the students. According to the teachers under the second factor, school counsellors are inadequate to provide guidance to parents and to deal with students and cause extra work for teachers.
