Social Studies Pre-Service Teachers Elective Course Preferences In 2018 Teacher Training Program
Abstract :
Social Studies course takes place as a course in 4th to 7th grade primary and secondary school curricula. The 4-year Social Studies teacher training process is carried out in line with the teacher training programs whose basic framework is determined by the Council of Higher Education. In addition to compulsory courses, 2018 program offers a list of elective courses that pre-service teachers must take for 4 years. Elective courses are divided into 3 categories as teaching knowledge, general knowledge and field education. However, it is seen that which of these courses will be opened in the departments is left to the stakeholders in education faculties. This study aims to determine the elective courses that the pre-service teachers consider more necessary and the courses they want to open. The data of this study, which was conducted as survey research, was collected from the social studies preservice teachers at seven different universities by using the questionnaire prepared by the researchers. The data of the research were analyzed with the help of frequency distributions and chi-square test. Following this study, it has been reached to the elective courses that the Social Studies pre-service teachers deem necessary and which elective courses they want to take. In addition, the differentiation status of these views according to university and gender variables were reached. Following the study, it is suggested that students opinions and needs should be taken into consideration during the opening of elective courses in faculties.
