Abstract :
The building inventory in Turkey led by schools and hospitals to be extracted and all existing buildings to be grouped on the basis of their damageability and risk as outlined in the National Earthquake Strategy and Action Plan (UDSEP 2023). In accordance with action plan, the determination of seismic performances and retrofitting of the buildings as deemed necessary with precedence placed on schools and hospitals are among the priorities. In our country, seismic safety of existing buildings is evaluated and performance levels are determined conforming to the Chapter 7 of Turkish Earthquake Code (DBYBHY 07). In this study, the seismic safety evaluation procedures and applied strengthening methods for one of the existing buildings at Afyon Kocatepe University constructed in 1991 which was used as a training and research hospital were elaborated before the new arrangements for re-use of the building as Faculty of Dentistry Education and Treatment Building. The purpose of this study is to guide Engineers for the seismic safety evaluation and the selection of proper strengthening details of existing buildings according to Turkish Earthquake Code (DBYBHY 07).
