Abstract :
In this study, the effect of wet and dry high intensity magnetic separators on removal of iron minerals from quartzite ore obtained from a private company in the region of Akalan, Çatalca Istanbul was investigated in order to produce a product which can be used in glass industry. The chemical analysis of the sample showed that the sample is composed of 97,35% SiO2, 1,66% Al2O3, 0,16% Fe2O3, 0,13% TiO2, 0,07% MgO. Additionally, the mineralogical analysis of the sample indicated that the sample contains mainly quartz and little iron minerals such as hematite, ilmenite, and tourmaline. In order to prepare the test sample for the experiments, an about 100 kg of representative quartzite ore was crushed and ground down to 0,5 mm at laboratories of Mining Engineering Department, Istanbul University. Then, the sample was classified into narrow size fractions (-0,5 mm + 0,212 mm; -0,212 mm + 0,106 mm; - 0,106 mm) to increase the separation efficiency. Finally, the wet and dry high intensity magnetic separation tests were performed for each size fractions and the results obtained from these tests were compared to find the best separation method for the beneficiation of quartzite ore.
