  • Abstract
Art tiles are one of the most preferred materials in ornamentation and creating venue effect in Anatolian architectural buildings (both interior and outdoor). Art tiles have found the chance to come up to now thanks to their abrasion resistance and strength. Medreses being one of the most special historical structures in Turkish tradition have been sometimes ornamented with art tiles so as to possess picturesque features and to gain structural strength. A great attention has been given to medreses in Anatolian Seljuk period and this got a huge boost especially in Alâeddin Keykubâd period. Medreses constructed in Konya, Kayseri, Sivas, Erzurum, Kırşehir, Tokat, Antalya and Ankara have become important science points in periods to which they belong. When a general assessment is made for art tiles used in architecture, it can be mentioned that this art is not preferred nowadays, but sometimes used in religious buildings such as mosque and shrine. In this study, structural features of art tiles used in Anatolian architecture were evaluated; also problems encountered in restoration of historical structures which include art tiles in both indoor and outdoor venues were interpreted in the context of historical heritage protection and characteristic physical-chemical features of art tiles.
