Abstract :
The concept of this study to investigate Ilgın coal layers that located in the 1,5 km far Çavuşçugöltownship (Ilgın‐Konya) and occurred in Neogene aged lithological sequence. In the study clays, which placed in different clay levels in the beneath and lower clay under the lignite layers, are investigated in terms of their mineralogical, geochemical properties and usability in the industry. Clays of the Ilgın Coal field can be separated into three different levels. Accordingly, light cream color roof claystone located on the top of the coal level and it’s thickness ranges from 3 m to 1,75 m. Intercalation with lignite levels black claystone’s thickness is up to 1 meter. Thickness of most important subclays and lower clays, that are under bottom lignite, changes from 5 to 30 m and their color is light‐dark gray. XRD and SEM investigations were performed clay samples collected from different clay levels of Ilgın coal deposit reveals that major clay minerals are kaolin and illite and non‐clay minerals are quartz, dolomite, aragonite, gypsum and siderite in lower clay levels. In addition to that, according to results of the technological tests of lower clays; drying shrinkage, firing shrinkage, plasticity and water absorption were determined to be 1,03 %, 5,88 %, 17,38 % and 1,67 respectively. Both the chemical composition and technological test results of clay showed that the Ilgın lower clay is suitable for brick tile soil and colored ceramic applications. Ilgın Lower clay visible + probable reserves are calculated as 13.320.828 tons.
