The Implementation of Optical and Capacitive Bubble Detector For İntravenous Fluid Therapy

Abstract :
Continuous or intermittent intravenous fluid therapy is applied to approximately 80% of hospitalizedpersons. Liquids are sent by intravenous sets mounted infusion pump to vascular access. Serum or nutritional supplements for patients is done by intravenous fluid therapy with according to time set by the health officials and quantities. In studies to determine errors in intravenous therapy it has been detected that thousands of people lost their life’s due to embolism every year. The aim of this study is to perform system by designing optic and capacitive sensor detected possible air bubbles operating at 600nm and 900 nm. In addition, this system has transducers to detect air bubbles working in accordance with Doppler, Snell and Coulomb’s laws. In this study, optical and capacitive ABD was performed due to low cost and more applicable to construction techniques according to ultrasonic sensor. As a result of studies, optic ABD based on Snell’s law and capacitive ABD based on Coulomb law was implemented. In the literature, although the work done on the capacitive ABD, it has been shown that detection of air bubbles with capacitive method is not economical solution due in terms of both sensitivity and selectivity. On the other hand, it is shown that realized optic ABD has high stability with low cost and for performed optical transducers of different wavelengths works done at 900 nm may select smaller air gap according to 600 nm.
