Abstract :
There are various methods to modify the unwanted properties of wooden materials. To treat withvarious chemical substance to increase, drying and dying or varnishing the surfaces, and to treat for the dimensional stability of wood for biological durability, acetylating of cell wall and thermal treatment modification are of important methods. But, these methods have some advantages and disadvantages. The most important disadvantage of the thermal treatment is the decrease of the mechanical properties of thermally treated wood. This decrease amount changes according to tree species, thermal treatment method, and the temperature of the method. In this study, the pine wood (Pinusbrutia Ten.) was treated at temperature of 180, 200 and 220°C for duration 3 hours. The density, equilibrium moisture content, weight loss, and Janka hardness of thermally treated pine wood were determined. The differences between groups were determined statistically. According to obtained data, it was tried to determine how the thermal treatment affect the hardness of the pine wood.
