Abstract :
Glass fibre reinforced polyester materials are mixed with fillings for two reasons; to improve mechanical properties and to reduce the cost of bulk material. In this study, the effect of the particle size of calcite material (CaCO3), added as cost‐reducing filler, on the mechanical properties of this polymer composite has been investigated. Glass fibre reinforced polyester matrix composite samples were prepared by adding calcite fillings of two different particle sizes (2.73 μm and 4.44μm), at five different amounts (5‐ 10‐20‐30 and 40%). The composite was produced by hand lay‐up technique. Composite samples were subjected to tensile, bending and impact tests. The results showed that the higher the calcite rate the worse the mechanical properties became. However, calcite filler of 2.73 μm particle size had lower negative impact on the properties compared to that of large (4.44μm) particles. Composites with calcite filler of 2.73 μm particle size showed better results by 2‐6.5 %, 1.4‐6.4% and 3.2‐6.5 % in tensile, bending and impact strength respectively when compared to that of larger particle size. Moreover, the effect of calcite rate and particle size on the overall cost of composites has also been investigated.
