KONUSUNDA BIR FARKINDALIK UYGULAMASI TRANSLATION/TRANSLATOR COMPETENCE IN TRANSLATOR TRAINING
Abstract :
This paper explores the concepts of translation and translator competencies and exemplifies their reflection on translator training on the undergraduate level with a classroom activity carried out in the Introduction to Translation course. Research on both cognitive and socio-cultural aspects of translation and translator competencies has certain points in common and it is possible to reach a definition of two main competencies. Translation meta-competence, on one hand, involves awareness of the nature of translation and responsibilities of the translator. Translator competence, on the other hand, is about the translator’s positioning of his/her profession. The translator needs to acquire certain competencies in order to be able to fulfill his/her responsibilities. These can be evaluated under the heading of translation meta-competence and divided into five subcategories: problem solving and decision making, researching skills, textual knowledge and skills, area/subject knowledge and cultural/linguistic knowledge. Classroom activities designed along these subcategories for the Introduction to Translation course will help students to acquire translation meta-competence. The classroom activity in this paper focuses on problem solving and decision making competency. This activity intends to raise students’ awareness of its importance and internalize it through practice.
