Abstract :
This study is intended to reveal the cultural, historical, stylistic, contextual problems encountered during the translation of the storybook by Jean-Christophe Rufin, “Sept histoires qui reviennent de loin”, and to discuss these problems in the light of different theories and methods of translation. Contextual, stylistic and semantic values in the source text, which includes 7 seven stories that show various stylistic features, are sought be transferred to the target text. To this purpose, in dealing with the linguistic and cultural elements, norms governing the speech acts of the target audience are taken into account. Of the problems encountered in the entire translation process, transferring the regional and historical information expressed in the source text through references, as well as the emotions the author made the source audience feel will top the list. While the primary purpose of the study, with quotations from the source and the target texts, is to introduce the problems and the solution methods aimed at maintaining the style and the function of the source text, it also offers solutions to the problems posed by the transfer of cultural elements. Within this scope, this study also deals with a number of translation methods (explicit translation, paraphrasing, annotation and use of footnotes) that are employed to pursue the functional requirements of the target language, without leading to a loss of information given in the source text.
