Abstract :
In this study, DIN 1.2344 hot work tool steel, which is widely used in industry, was subjected to milling operations using high speed steel (HSS) circular saw blades. Milling operations were performed at five different cutting speeds (20, 25, 30, 40 and 50 m/min), at five different table feed rates (20, 40, 63, 80 and 100 mm/min) and at a constant depth of cut of 1 mm without using coolant. Vertical and horizontal components of the cutting forces developed during milling operations and the surface roughness values were measured. Vertical cutting force components (Fz) were found to be almost 50 % higher than horizontal cutting force components. At 20 m/min cutting speeds, increasing table feed rate increased the surface roughness values significantly.
