Use of zeolite and silica fume as replacement materials in cement mortars

Abstract
In this study, the properties of the cement mortars containing zeolite + silica fume as Portland cement replacement materials were investigated, and the results obtained were compared with the control mortar. In the experiments, sand and water quantities were kept constant. Zeolite was used at 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30% replacement by weight of cement in the mortars while 10% of silica fume was added into the mixtures. Water demand, setting times, soundness, compressive and flexural strength, water absorption, porosity, dry unit weight, abrasion resistance and carbonation depth of the mortars was determined. The findings obtained showed that zeolite and silica fume used as replacement materials for cement improved the properties of the cement mortar, exhibiting a better performance than the control mortar according to the tests performed.
