Title Of Article :
Numerical investigation of velocity distribution around bridge abutment with different geometries
Abstract :
Bridge failures are described as the flow-induced erosion of soil material from around bridge abutments and piers set in rivers. It is caused by an acceleration of flow around the bridge foundation that accompanies a rise in water levels during floods. However this topic has a great interest of researchers in recent years but still failed to reach the desired stage, and a universal method has not been developed. Therefore laboratory experiments and field observations are widely used to understand scour mechanism around bridge abutments and piers. In recent years, mainly based on computational fluid dynamics, numerical modeling and evaluation of these data for the solution of similar problems, has become as an alternative tool. In this study, in order to investigate velocity distribution around rectangle, cylinder and trapezoidal shaped bridge abutment, three- dimensional numerical model was generated by using the FLOW 3D computer program. Modeling results were compared with experimental results in literature.
