Abstract :
Architectural design and structural configuration have become a serious concern in the building industry of Turkey after seen the poor seismic performance of existing reinforced concrete buildings under earthquakes. It is generally assumed that the earthquake reliability of a building can change only depending on building’s structural configuration. However, the architectural design decisions is so significant in terms of earthquake behaviour of buildings, since the failures of a building which expose to earthquake loads have started in architectural design process. Therefore, earthquake resistance of buildings should be considered in the early stages of building design. Architectural design is not only an arrangement which eliminate functional and aesthetic anxiety. The design decisions made in vertical direction also have effective role on earthquake performance of a building. In this study, structural irregularities in vertical direction and their solution suggestions described in literature have been investigated in detail based on Turkish Earthquake Code 2007. Moreover, short column effect, weak columns-strong beam and pounding effect which were commonly observed after earthquakes were examined deeply with given solutions in literature. A building was analyzed wit and without overhangs and sot storey irregularity coefficients were compared. The study mainly aims to consider the conditions which cause vertical structural irregularities in the architectural design process.
