Abstract :
This research was carried out to determine the effects of harvest season on forage yield and quality of common vetch genotypes. Experiments were conducted at Kahramanmaraş Agricultural Research Institute for two years during 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 growing seasons with 3 replications. A total of 9 common vetch genotypes, 4 of which supplied from Menemen Agricultural Research Institute, 3 from Kahramanmaraş and 2 natural genotypes were used as the plant material of the study. Plants were harvested at initial flowering stage and full blossom stage. Yields and other quality parameters were determined. Fresh fodder yield, dry forage yield, crude protein ratio, protein yield, ADF, NDF and ash parameters were investigated as the yield and quality parameters. While there was an increase in ADF and NDF ratios with the progression of harvest season, a decrease was observed in ash ratio. ADF rates of genotypes varied between 26.28-45.43%, NDF ratios between 32.32-49.56%, fresh fodder yield between 1212.1-4386.0 kg/da, dry forage yield between 213.7-709.6 kg/da, crude protein ratio between 17.21-24.76%, protein yield between 36.78-169.45 kg/da. Considering current results from different genotypes, Karaelçi common vetch genotype with high protein and hay yield can be recommended for the region.
