Abstract :
The province of Kayseri is in the first place by producing 11.119 (34%) tons of pumpkin seed (Cucurbita pepo L.) and contributes significantly to the economy of this province. The objective of this study was to make a survey in the province of Kayseri to detect figures and facts in pumpkin seed production. For this aim, 45 farmers in Develi, 23 in Yesilhisar, 23 Tomarza, 9 in Talas towns were surveyed. 36% of farmers had a range of age of 36-55, 51% had elementary school diploma, 43% had a land size larger than 100 da. 76% of pumpkin seed producing farmers used no irrigation, %94 did not clasify their products. 81% of the farmers wished to have alternative crop plant, most farmers complained high oil and fertilizer prices. Lack of available high quality and yielding cultivars was one of the most important problems. The farmers also wished to have production-based subsidy rather tan land-based subsidy. Majority (61%) of farmers did not have soil analyzed and 48% had a yield of 1-25 kg/da, 33% of the farmers had 41 kg/da or more. Ratio of the farmers having insurance for their crop was only 4% and 99% had no information on good agrictultural practices. This study provided critical information for the ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestok, farmers and related private and public institutions, and potential for private companies.
