Abstract :
In this study, effects of seaweed extract, polyethyleneglycol (PEG) and osmotic conditioning (OC) treatments on germination percantages and mean germination times of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seeds were investigated. Osmatic conditioning with seaweed extract of 1/500 solution was applied to pepper seeds at 20 °C for 1, 2 and 3 days and osmatic conditioning with PEG-6000 was applied at –1.0 MPa for 1, 2 and 3 days. Osmatic conditioning with seaweed extract increased germination percentages and decreased mean germination times of pepper seeds. The greatest germination percantage was observed in Ege Acı Sivri and Yalova Çorbacı pepper cultivars 93.5% with 1 day OC treatment and germination percantage of control seeds were respectively observed as 85 and 87.5%. The shortest mean germination time was observed in Ege Acı Sivri cultivar 5.83 days and Yalova Çorbacı cultivar 8.74 days with 3 days seaweed extract OC and the mean germination time of control seeds were respectively observed as 7.36 and 11.34 days. Osmotic Conditioning with PEG increased germination percantage of pepper seeds, but these increases were not significant and decreased mean germination times. The shortest mean germination time was observed in Ege Acı Sivri cultivar 6.27 days with 3 days OC treatment and in Yalova Çorbacı cultivar 10.47days with 2 days OC with PEG - 6000. It was concluded based on these findings, besides PEG-6000 and KNO3 –like chemicals, pre-sowing OC treatments with seaweed extract can reliably be applied to pepper seeds as an organic practice.
