Bacterial Pathogens in Cultured Red Progy (Pagrus pagrus) and Red Seabream (Pagrus major)

This study was carried out with the aim of detecting the bacterial pathogens causing the disease in the red porgy (Pagrus pagrus) and red seabream (Pagrus major) fishes cultivated in the cage farm in our country. 8 moribund red porgy and 5 red seabream weighing 100-250 gr were investigated in a sampling period between 2009 and 2010. Externally pigmentation problem and swelling in the abdomen were seen in moribund fish while lubrication of internal organs, liver haemorrhage and shrinkage internally. As a result of bacteriological investigation, Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae was only isolated and identified from moribund red porgy, while from P. damselae subsp. damselae were isolated and identified with other pathogen bacteria Vibrio alginolyticus, Stapylococcus aeureus and Microcooccus sp. from moribund red seabream. Histopathologically, degeneration and liquefactive necrosis in the parenchyma cells of liver, tubular necrosis and multifocal melanocyte macrophage foci in the kidneys, melting in muscle and gill filaments, necrosis in the intestinal mucosa and the intestinal epithelium sloughed into lumen, spleen emptying as well as hemosiderin deposits were observed. As a result, P. damselae subsp. damselae as a primary pathogen for these two fish species caused acute Photobacteriosis that was firstly determined in this study.
