Abstract :
The purpose of this study is to examine teacher candidates’ understanding of Turkish folk and traditional Turkish art music through metaphors. The sample group of the study is the 432 students who are studying in the Science (%20,37), Mathematics (%6,25), Music (%15,05), Painting-Work (%8,33), Classroom (%13,43), Social (%14,35) and Turkish Education (%22,22) in Nigde University Education Faculty in the autumn semester of 2014 - 2015 school year. Collecting data of the study were asked to complete the prompt “Turkish folk music is like…because…” and “Traditional Turkish art music is like… because…”. According to the results overall, teacher candidates produced 67 metaphors of Turkish folk music and 78 metaphors about traditional Turkish art music. Based on these metaphors about Turkish folk music 12 conceptual categories and about traditional Turkish art music 13 conceptual categories were identified. In the study, it is determined that cultural elements, an element that provides continuity, a descriptive component, a fundamental part, an element creates a sense of belonging and representative feature category of Turkish folk music belonging to the conceptual categories are most participants found. It is also found that peace, happiness and health-giving element, an element reminiscent of the past, a precious commodity, an element that define the artistic features and an element appeal to mature people of Traditional Turkish Arts in the conceptual categories are most participants found.
