Abstract
This article is on the American philosopher John Rogers Searle’s famous thought experiment known as the Chinese Room Argument. It was developed by Searle to be a proof that computers, which function using artificial intelligence, do not actually consciously think. Before examing the Chinese Room Argument in some detail, this article first looks at Alan Turing’s Turing Test which Searle developed his thought experiment in opposition to. The final part of the article focuses on the ethical implications of Searle’s position on computaer consciousness
