Salinity Tolerance at Germination Stage of Some Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Genotypes Collected From North East Anatolia Region and Çoruh Valley

Abstract
This study was conducted in order to determine salinity tolerance at germination stage of thirty-eight bean genotypes collected from North East Anatolia Region and the Çoruh Valley in completely randomized experiment design with three replications. Germination tests were conducted in a controlled dark cabinet with a constant ambient temperature of 25 °C ± 1.0 oC in petri dishes and germination performance of the genotypes were tested under five different NaCl concentrations [0 (control), 60, 120, 180 ve 240 mM]. The increased NaCl doses significantly decreased germination rate and delayed mean germination time. However, under saline conditions, there was a significant variation among genotypes for seed germination, which allow the selection of salt tolerant genotypes. Twenty genotypes had high germination rate, short germination time and low sensitivity index values at all of the NaCl doses and these genotypes were selected for future greenhouse experiments in order to determine salinty tolerance at seedling growth stage.
