The Variations of Ozone, Nitrogen Dioxide and Sulphur Dioxide Being Harmful on Plants in Atmosphere of Erzurum

Ozone, nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide concentrations which are harmful on plants were determined during 8 weeks covering winter and summer seasons. The measurements were weekly performed at 10 sampling points located in Erzurum city by using passive samplers. While the mean O3, NO2 and SO2 concentrations during winter period were found 55.4±11.3, 14.0±7.7 and 17.8±14.2 μg/m3, respectively: These concentrations in summer were 63.1±11.5, 10.7±6.3 and 3.4±2.5 μg/m3, respectively. These values generally lie below the air quality standards recommended by the national and international ambient air quality regulation. The seasonal variations have shown a maximum O3 concentration during summer while NO2 and SO2 levels have maxima in winter. However, the highest value of ozone and the lowest value of nitrogen and sulphur dioxide were obtained from rural areas where vehicular traffic is lower.
