Abstract :
The objective of this study was to use imaging method to determine of residue cover as affected by different soil tillage practices. Line transect and imaging technique were used to determine the amount of residue cover after each tillage application at two different depths and two different forward speeds and the applicability of the imagery was assessed by comparing the results to straight line technique. As a result, working depth had no significant effect on the residue cover for primary soil tillage implements. Line transect technique reveals that at different forward speeds primary tillage implements and the secondary tillage implements that were used after plows had significant effect on the residue cover (P 0.05) whereas secondary tillage implements had no significant effect on the residue cover when the primary tillage was carried out with a chisel instead of a plow. According to imagery results, however, differences in the residue cover were not statistically significant in any of the tillage practices as a result of varying forward speed. T-test resulted in a high correlation (R²=0.91) between line transect and imagery data in primary soil tillage. On the other hand, the correlation was too small (R²= 0.07) between line transect and imagery data for secondary tillage equipment, with relatively small correlation (R²=0.36) in soils tilled with chisel.
