A Study on Determining the Consumer Awarness Level and Attitudes About Genetıcally Modified Organisis (The Case of Gerze County of Sinop Province)
Abstract :
This study investigated the awareness level and attitudes of consumers in the urban area of Gerze county of Sinop province on GMO. The data collected through a questionnaire administered to 266 consumers estimated using proportional sampling made up the main material of the study. The awareness level of the consumers was determined by scoring the questionnaire data. The factors affecting the awareness level statistically were studied after the awareness level was determined. The variables likely to affect GMO awareness level were analyzed, and as a result of the binary logit analysis, the gender of the interviewed person, having children at the age of 3-6 and 11-16, income level, market and features were found to be likely factors to have an effect. Factor analysis was used to summarize the variables and these factors were used as explanatory variable in the LOGIT analysis. It was concluded in the study that the subjects interviewed did not have enough information about transgenic, their risk perception was high as they did not have knowledge based on science about GMO product use, and that they needed to be informed about GMO products.
