Abstract
Building design in the profession of architecture becomes concrete with building material. In the traditional context various properties such as technical performance, aesthetic concerns, short and long term costs and social parameters should are taken into account for the building material selection. However, building materials have crucial roles for the definition of buildings in ecological, livable and sustainable contexts. In this framework, the characteristics of environment-product relationship gains importance for the building material selction under sustainable architecture approach. Building materials cause distinct environmental effects in each phase of life cycles. Therefore, there should be a selection by evaluating the building material-environment interaction during the processes of raw material acquisition, production, application to the building, utilization, recycling, and disposal. In this study, models that are primarily developed for material selection are analyzed. A building material selection model is examined in parallel with sample models and in the context of environmental effects by associating it with Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) system that is effective in sustainable building design.
