Abstract :
Masonry brick wall may provide adequate gravitational strength under static load as vertical load carrying member even if the building has no reinforced concrete structural elements. However, in case of earthquake, explosion or under impact loads because of their insufficient lateral strength and rigidity the brick walls are vulnerable to damage. Such advantages as low cost, easy to build and use of natural materials of the masonry wall, many methods such as jacketing and adding of layers etc. have been studied experimentally for many years in order to improve lateral resistance of masonry walls. These methods are effective however they, require a long construction period, may cause loss of architectural functionality and deteriorate structural aesthetics. Therefore the development of a new technique is quite useful. In this study, masonry walls are strengthened with steel strips or steel plates which is cheap to provide and easy to obtain. Presented experimental study covers the results of 4 walls built with hollow clay masonry unit (BT), of which 3 of them were strengthened symmetrically using three different (A, B and C) steel member schemes. The results of the experiments were discussed with regard to shear strength improvement, deformation and energy dissipation capacity and the performance of the strengthening schemes.
