Abstract :

This study was conducted descriptively in order to examine nursing students’ thoughts about organ donation and transplantation. Not following the method of choosing samples in the research, 460 students studying at the School of Nursing and the School of Health and agreeing to participate in the research were included. In data collection, the form in accordance with “the form of students’ perceptions about organ donation and transplantation” prepared by Sarıtaş and Köşgeroğlu was used. The data were evaluated through percentage calculation. It was marked that 75.7% of the students do not have sufficient information about organ donation and only 1.7% of them donated their organs. 28.7% of the students stated that they think of donating their organs when they are healhty. 76.1% of them expressed that their parents’ positive attitude towards organ donation will speed up their decision of organ donation 90.2% declared that religious functionaries must pioneer and give information about organ donation, and 57% stated that they are anxious that the organ they will donate will be exploited. It was determined that the nursing students were not informed about organ donation sufficiently during the undergraduate education that the ratio of the students thinking of donating their organs is low and that the students could not take an active part in finding a donor for the patients waiting for an organ.
