The Effect of Exercises on Pain After open Heart Surgery
Abstract :
This is a descriptive study to determine the pain level during exercises in patients who went through open heart surgery.The study was conducted between December 2008- June 2009 in The Intensive Care Unit of The Cardiovascular Surgery Department of Celal Bayar University Hospital. The sampling of the study was done by ‘nonprobability sampling technique’ in 62 patients who accepted to participate in the study. The collection of the data was done by ‘Patient Identity Form’ and ‘Visual Analogue Scale’. The evaluation of the data was done by Student t, paired t and Mann Whitney U tests. It was found that the pain during exercises was greater then pain at rest (p 0.01) and the pain level during post operative first day was greater then second day (p 0.01) and the coughing exercise was the most painfull exercise of all (p 0.01). The average pain experienced during coughing, using spirometer exercises and at rest in the first postoperative day and during the coughing exercise in the second postoperative day was greater in female patients (p 0,05). Age was found to be effective only in the second postoperative day during coughing exercise (p 0.05).
