The Validity and Reliability of Turkish Form of Self Efficacy Scale for Children and Adolescents with Asthma

The purpose of this study is to adapt Self-Efficacy Scale, developed by Schlösser and Havermans to evaluate the self-efficacy of asthmatic children and adolescents, to Turkish and assess its validity and reliability. The study was designed and applied methodically. The study population comprised of 108 asthmatic children and adolescents, using inhaler and aged between 10 and 18, registered at Health Centers in Central Tokat between November 2007 and November 2008. A sampling method was not used as the entire population was planned to be included in the study. The Asthmatic Child/Adolescent Personal Information Form and the Self-Efficacy Scale for Children and Adolescents with Asthma were used to gather data. It was determined that the Self-Efficacy Scale for Children and Adolescents with Asthma could be used unidimensionally in conclusion of factor analysis conducted on the scale.The internal consistency coefficient of the scale (average score 82.370 ±14.85) was 0.89, and the total point correlation coefficients ranged between 0.370 and 0.674. In conclusion, the scale is highly valid and reliable for the Turkish community.
