Abstract :
Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disease of unknown etiology that affects the population of motor neurons located in motor cortex, brain stem, and spinal cord. Clinical findings vary depending on the motor neuron area that is affected. The primary findings are fatigue, muscle weakness, fasciculations, and lack of coordination of movements. The disease requires long-term monitoring, control, and care because of the fact that it may lead individuals to be dependent at varying rates in activities of daily living and may cause permanent impairment. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis has more psychological effects than other chronic diseases owing to its features. The social and workinglife, sexual functions, and economic situation of an individual with ALS change dramatically. It is believed that deformations related to the disease and muscle atrophy frequently result in anxiety, depression,a sense of guilt, and lack of self-respect; and these factors may increase the effects of the disease. In addition,it is of quiteimportance to meet physical needs of the individuals with ALS. The main purposes of nursing interventions are maintaining physical security for the patient, overcoming anxiety and agitation, improving communication, supporting independence and self-care activities, meeting socialization needs, providing balanced nutrition, overcoming sleep disorders, preventing complications, and also supporting and educating the family.
