Determination of environmental attitudes and awareness of nurses working in university hospital

Introduction: The environment is defined as an organism s habitat concept and many nurse theorists emphasize the importance of environment on health. As a result of population growth, industrialization, deterioration of ecological balance, many environmental problems are emerging and on the basic of these problems, low perception, attitude and awareness towards environmental issues are related. The purpose of the study was to determine environmental awareness and attitudes of nurses. Methods: The present descriptive study was carried out at a university hospital. Any sample selection was made and between totally N:486 nurses, study was completed with n:230 (47.32%). For data collection, 8 itemed questionnaire that was developed by the researchers, the Environmental Awareness Scale and Environmental Attitude Scale were used. Findings: Eighty nine point one percent of the nurses were woman; 57.8% of them were married; average age of them was 30.87 ± 6.38 and working time was 9.13±6.57 years. Averaged scores were 85.51±5.81 with total scale scores of over 90 for environmental awareness and 88.59±8.81 with total scale scores of over 110 for environmental attitude scale. Conclusion: Determination the reasons for the lower awareness of the situation of nurses attitudes towards the environment is recommended to replace their attitudes to behavioral interventions.
