The Assess of Illness Perception, Psychosocial Adjustment and Glycemic Control in Type II Diabetic Mellitus Patients

Abstract :
Objective: The aim of the research is to determine the assess of illness perception, psychosocial adjustment in diabetics, and to examine the glycemic control influence of these variables.Methods: This descriptive study was performed on 300 diabetics who had medical treatment between July 2012 and January 2014 The Ministry of Health in the province of Erzurum, a hospital and a university hospital center. The study data were collected using patient information sheets, Illness Perception Questionnaire and Psychosocial Adjusment of Illness Scale-Self Report.Results: Illness Perception Questionnaire the scores of illness symptoms were 7.48±3.09, the averages of opinions about the illness subscales; emotional representatives 21.09±4.91, results 18.95±2.40, personal control 18.50±2.27, timeline (acute/chronic) 17.68±1.74, treatment control 17.26±1.84, timeline (cyclical) 14.59±1.41 and illness percception 14.45±3.14. Illness reasons subscale scores; risk factors were 16.91±3.68, psychological attributions 15.87±3.90, immunity 6.15±2.13, accident or luck 2.96±1.32. psychological adaptation in total 48.20±23.91, PAIS-SR subscale scores; sexual relation were 8.31±5.92, professional circle 7.96±4.78, social circle 6.73±5.38, healthcare orientation 9.13±4.10, psychologic pressure 6.88±4.28, family relations 2.79±2.36 and family circle 6.40±4.42. An important correlation was recorded between ıllness perception and psychosocial adaptation scores, and glycemic control variables.Conclusion: It was determined that in accordance with descriptive qualities and illness qualities illness perception, and psychosocial adjustment levels can have differences, and illness perception influences the HbA1c level of psychosocial adjustment levels.
