Abstract :
Objective: This research has been planned in order to determine the education needs of schizophrenic patient and patient relatives and to be a guide to psychoeducation interventions implemented to individuals. Method: This descriptive study has been conducted with 35 patients and 47 patient relatives registered to Community Mental Health Center. Sociodemographic form and “The health education needs of schizophrenic patients and patient relatives’’ forms are used for data collecting. Results: Women need to more education on general information about schizophrenia (p=0.04) and the subdimension of communication-social relations (p=0.02) than men, and that those having the extended family structure need to more education about overcoming the stress than those having the elementary and fragmented family structures. It has been found out that those being primary school graduate have difficulty mainly to cope with the symptoms of schizophrenia, and that there are significant differences at daily life abilities (0.02) and the sub-dimensions of overcoming the stress (0.00) of those not taking any education. Conclusion: As a result of our research, it has been thought that it is important to be a woman and to live in the extended family, to be lower level of education and not to take any education in the determination of education needs.
