Abstract :
Although it is still discussed about where the shadow plays came from to Turks, it is an accepted reality that these plays gained its main identity in Istanbul the capital city of Ottoman Empire. Kara-göz Shadow Play, which takes important place in theatrical plays, was often displa-yed both in palace, in its sorroundings and in different envronments among people with different reasons.In addition to that, it is inevitable to see many scenes belonging to Istanbul in Karagoz Shadow Plays that were displayed in different places of İstan-bul. It is possible to follow diferent views of İstanbul in the beginning of the XII and XX centuries. In many researches that are done for Karagöz shadow plays, it is mentioned that we love these plays so much because they show the real parts from life, reflects experiances and we find slices of our own lives.The Karagöz Shadow Plays show us the great Istanbul from the window of ‚neigbourhood‛ that was a small part of Ottoman Empire.Also in that researh, in tha light of such researces done before, Ottoman society’s vital elemens such as social envronments, belief, dressing, job and entertainment is going to be analyzed.
