Abstract :
In this study, the excursions of Ahmed I, Mehmed IV, Mahmud II, Abdulmecid and Abdulaziz to Gelibolu and Çanakkale have been dealt with. Due to its strategic situation, fortresses and bastions were built in Çanakkale from Mehmed the Conqueror s period onwards. Five of the Ottoman Sultans visited those military buildings in Çanakkale. Ahmed I came to Gelibolu and Çanakkale in 1613. Mehmed IV visited the Dardanel strait two times in 1659 and 1665. In his first visit, his mother Hatice Sultan also accompanied him. Both Sultans who were interested in hunting engaged in hunting activities in their visits. The other three Sultans, who did country tours in 19th century, visited Gelibolu and Çanakkale for different aims. Particularly, Mahmud II (in 1831) and Abdulmecid (in 1844) made visits in order to inspect closely the conditions of people, receive their complaints and meet their needs. Other aims of these visits were to observe the reflections of the new reforms carried out in the fields of administration, finance and social. The Sultan Abdulaziz came to Gelibolu and Çanakkale two times, while returning from Egypt (in 1863), and going to Europe (in 1867). The Sultans visited the graves of Süleyman Pasha and Yazıcızade, and the fortresses and the bastions in Çanakkale as well. Poor people both from the Muslims and the Christians were also helped during the visits. In addition, some gifts were given to administrative, military and religious officials.
