Abstract :
The khalfe tradition is a tradition mainta-ined especially by the Khorezmian women since the 18th century. This tradition, which dates back to the Bard-Baksı tradition, the oldest Turkish tradition of epic, has common features with minstrelsy and maddah drama in Anatolian culture. The instrument mostly used in in khalfe groups, which usually consist of three people called hanende (singer), sazende (instrument player) and rakkase (belly dancer), is an ac-cordion named Garmon, which is at the same time a Russian musical instrument. The songs played might be poems of famous poets as well as khalfes’ own poems and compositions. However, there are also one-man khalfes in which there are no instruments and dancers. The literary form which is most frequently used in khalfe tradition is romance; however, poems belonging to classical poetry are also sung. These poems might be related to any issue, individual and social. The most famous people of this tradition in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are found in Khorezm region.
