Abstract :
This article focuses on the word elbis that has been detected as a name of place in some villages of Karaman. Elbis, in these villages (Akarköy, Gökçe, Paşabağı), is a name that local people entitled to the hills consisting of stones. This naming is releated with religious approach in the entitlement tradition. Elbis has been obtained through sound changes (metathesis, vocalic alternation) of the word iblis meaning “devil”. This word takes place in Turkish language and in some Turkish epopes with variables like ilbis, ilbiz, elbis, elbiz, albıs, albız, almıs. The common feature of examples is that all of them have negative content.
