Abstract :
‚Sham‛ is the name of a region in the past which comprises an area larger than today’s Damascus. The capital city of today’s Syria was known as ‚Dimishk‛. Having become one of the prominent centers of Islamic civilization over the centuries, Sham province and Damascus city is one of the cities of which the Classical Turkish poetry writes about regarding different aspects. Some of the Classical poets reflected their personal impressions about that area after their visits there, while some others used the name and characteristics of the city in the context of some stereotype associations. In this paper, we studied how the poets used the word and connotations of ‚Sham‛, and we presented the observations of poets about the region and city of ‚Sham‛.
