Archaic Elements in the Diwan of Zâtî
Abstract :
The archaic words used in daily language take on an important role in uncovering the historical roots of that language. Another feature of these words is their contribution to finding out the social life, customs, belief systems and generally cultural richness of the time they emerged. Archaic words take on an important role in the analysis of the etymology of the words used today and historical process of change. The Word archaic which is French origin means “ancient” and may refer to a period of time preceding a classical period. Turkish Language has lots of archaic words used in everyday language and in literary works. Divan poetry texts which could only be understood by literates and intellectuals of their times also has significant proportion of archaic words. Zâtî,known as the teacher of poets, uses lots of archaic words in his Diwan which collects his poems. This study examines archaic words found in the Diwan of Zâtî.
