Abstract :
In artworks, small elements which are repeated regularly and have constant characteristics as outlines are called ‚motives‛. In this article, we will briefly discuss the aspect of mill which is one of the first tools used by human and has a past as long as the history of humanity as a motive in our literature and Mill of Sabahattin Ali and the mill of Alphonse Daudet, one of the important artists of French literature will be compared. As is known, with the mill that facilitates the daily life of human beings, proverbs and idioms have been formed and poems have been written. In the poems written during the Classic period of our literature, mainly the grinding feature of the mill was emphasized. This aspect of the mill involves indicators of the temporality of the world and the status of human in it. It is seen that this motive is mainly used by our other Classic poets, in particular Hayali and Nabi. Especially, in Tanzimat Reform Era, we find the motive of mill in Terci-i Bent of Ziya Pasha. We see there that Ziya Pasha assigned to the mill its meaning in our traditional poetry according to the classical poetic aesthetics. Then in the novel ‚Mill‛ of Reşat Nuri Güntekin, we find that the mill metaphorically points out the diplomatic wheel of the system in process. Also in Western literature, the mill begins to appear as a symbol starting from the work of Cervantes called ‚Don Quixote‛. In particular, the work of French writer Alphonse Daudet called ‚Letters From My Mill‛ is a remarkable one. In this work, the mill is a place to shelter in and a window opening out to the world, in some sense an ivory tower where the writer writes his letters. The mills we will meet on the way from Sabahattin Ali’s mill to that of Alphonse Daudet not only are places in which human matures, but they also express the life itself.
