Abstract :
With one of the 19th century philosophers, Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche‟s (1844-1900) presenting a concept like „superior man‟ to man who changed and had new paradigms with the industrial revolution, it was seen that he brought him to the state of an ideal being. Having turned into the symbol of ideal being, „superior man‟ leads to the birth of a new human type by finding response in the modern world; from philosphy to art, from economy to politics, with the old teachings being shaken. In the field of novel also, it was observed that this concept had influence on August Strindberg‟s (1849-1912) novel By The Open Sea from 19th century Swedish literature and Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu‟s (1889-1974) novel Yaban from 20th century Turkish literature. This study examined how the concept of „superior man‟ influenced the above-mentioned novels and addressed the similarities and differences between the novels with this respect. The similarities and differences were revealed under the topics like „ portrait of superior man‟, „flock‟, „love/woman‟, „religion‟ and „loneliness‟. It was stated that „superior man‟ was of universal quality, not restricted to a certain country or a certain community in Strindberg; while in Yakup Kadri he was of national quality moving from an ideological point of view. Besides, it was emphasized that the main characters of both authors showed failures to represent „superior man‟ as an ideal man.
