Abstract :

Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı (1910-1956) and Ziya Osman Saba (1910-1957) are our two distinguished poets who gave trend to both Turkish literature and poetry with their views. Two poets’ friendship begining in high school lasted until the death of them and poet was one of the arteries fostering the friendship between them. Even when they were apart from each other in such cases as military, overseas training and etc, they did not fell apart. Turkish poetry has always kept an important place on their agenda. So, it is seen that Turkish poetry was the main issue in their letters written to each other. They discussed the topic, what the poetry is and what the poetry must be, in these letters at length. Ziya Osman Saba hid the letters written by Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı. These letters which are written at various times have become a book with a title “Letters to Ziya”. However the same situation for the letters written by Ziya Osman Saba is out of question. In this study, therefore, from “Letters to Ziya” forth, only the opinions put forward on poetry art in the letters of Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı were discussed. According to Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı, the issue is not but utterance is important in a poem. Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı describing poetry with such phrases as a sweet trouble, firstborn, first and last love and happiness sees poetry as the most important job in life. According to him, in any case or challenge, you need to take refuge behind poetry. With this study, the ideas of poet with regard to this most important job in life have been examined in five sub-headings and shed light into Cahit Sıtkı Tarancı’s poetry.
