Ahmed Rasim as the “Translator” in the Turkish Translation History: Preliminary Notes for a Translation-Oriented Study

This study aims to examine Ahmed Rasim’s identity as a “translator”, whose novel translations from French into Ottoman Turkish between 1304 [1886] and 1322 [1904] have contributed to positioning and acceptance of this genre within the Ottoman/Turkish literary system, in the witness of book covers and prefaces. The main research question is that Ahmed Rasim’s fiction translations have not been investigated in a comprehensive way by including witnesses within the context of translation studies. Firstly, Ahmed Rasim’s novel translations will be listed and translations with prefaces will be detected, and then prefaces will be transcribed and it will be attempted to investigate how the translator existed within the new Turkish cultural and literary system. Ahmed Rasim is one of the translators of his era, who “did the most important translations” and translated the highest number of books, among others such as Ahmed Midhat Efendi, Ahmed İhsan [Tokgöz], Abdullah Zühdü and Selanikli Tevfik. In conclusion, it will be attempted to evaluate the results of paratextual analysis, which solely aims at detecting and descripting the corpus, with a focus on translation and translator.
