    Family Opinions on Mother Tongue Teaching of Bilingual Turkish Children

  • Abstract
    Thanks to the cultural transfer, one of the most important roles of the language, the culturally specific values enable to survive. Bilingual children who live abroad are associated with not only the language and culture of this country but also their mother tongue which they communicate with their parents. Bilingual children need a good mother tongue education in order to maintain the culture of the family they come from. Turkish and Turkish culture lesson developed for bilingual Turkish children living abroad are designed to provide children with teaching Turkish language and culture as well as basic language skills and adapting them when they come Turkey. However, it is thought that the interest the families living abroad teach their children Turkish language which is their mother tongue with the third generation decreases, and also the researches carried out give this result. In our research, it was aimed to determine the opinions of the families of Turkish children who live in France on teaching Turkish. Interviews were held with 12 families who live in France with different characteristics. A semi-structured discussion forum has been implemented. Themes were previously determined, and the data has been interpreted according to these themes. The answer given by the majority of Turkish families is that they should not forget their culture and, so they should learn the language.
